2011 Workshop Descriptions


July 9, 2011; 1-3 p.m. Keeping a Field Journal - Have you ever wanted to keep record of your findings while exploring nature? Join botanical artist Ann Payne in the "field" to learn about the art and science of nature journaling. Ann will give tips on what to record and how to most effectively make use of your journal. July 10, 2011; 2-4 p.m. Hypertufa Container Making - Make and take home a lightweight planter with the look of an antique stone trough! Leader Kay Beamer will guide you through the process and provide helpful tips for getting creative with this unique home-made planter. Limit 24 participants. Cost: $25 WVBG members, $30 non-members. July 24, 2011; 1-4 p.m. Attracting Butterflies - Join leaders Bill and Emilie Johnson to learn how to make your outdoor space a haven for butterflies. The Johnsons will lead a short walk around the grounds (with a focus on the butterfly garden, of course) and point out butterfly larval plants, food plants, and areas that provide shelter. August 7, 2011; 1-4 p.m. Nature Photography - Learn how to use your camera more effectively as you capture the beauty and wonder of the natural world. Local nature photography enthusiast Dave Smaldone will teach participants how to use simple settings on their cameras, give compositional tips, and encourage seeing creatively in a variety of natural settings.
