The Appalachian mountains are a global hotspot for salamander biodiversity and West Virginia alone has 35 species of salamanders. Join wildlife biologist and WVU PhD student Sara Crayton to look for stream and forest salamanders and learn about identification, natural history, and conservation. Catching and interacting with colorful salamanders is a fantastic way for people of all ages to develop a love for nature! Come prepared to step into shallow stream water and muddy ground. Free for WVBG members, $15 for non-members.

In this workshop, participants will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of pewter casting processes from start to finish. Join Dylan Collins and begin with the design and fabrication of various small-scale, nature-inspired casting molds. Molten metal will then be poured into participants’ molds, followed by the use of chemical patinas to create rich, lustrous finishes on the final ornaments. Ages 12 and up. $25 for WVBG members, $35 for non-members.
* This workshop is part of our Arts in the Garden series, which is funded through a Community Arts Grant. The Community Arts Grant is made possible through a collaborative effort between YCF and Arts Mon, with funding from the Monongalia County Commission and the Douglas H. Tanner Memorial Fund for the Arts.

Your experience will include a two-hour walk, that will typically be less than a mile in length, responding to different invitations to experience aspects of the natural world. Ages 12 and up. Join Jim Rye to learn how to transplant and care for various Solanacea family seedlings (tomato, eggplant, and/or pepper) in an Earthbox “container garden” or other types of gardening containers or raised beds. Emphasis is on seedling varieties that produce smaller fruits (e.g., cherry-type tomatoes). Additional emphasis will be given to transplanting seedlings of Mexican sunflower (Tithonia rotundifolia) to garden areas and the benefits of doing so. Participants will take home at least 3 vegetable seedlings, a Tithonia seedling, and horticulture fleece to get started. Ages 14 and up. Space limited. $25 for WVBG members, $35 for non-members.
