Learn how to germinate seeds and raise seedlings indoors that you can later transplant into your spring garden. WVU Professor Emeritus and Monongalia County Extension Master Gardener Jim Rye will demonstrate the process, show equipment needed, and give recommendations and instructions for care. Each participant will take home cell trays of different types of vegetable seeds (which will include at least two types of basil and two types of tomatoes). All materials provided. Ages 14 and up. Space limited. $10 for WVBG members, $15 for non-members.

Please join Laura VanHorn and AmeriCorps and VISTA members from North Elementary School as they share different methods of incorporating garden-based learning into curriculum. In addition, learn about nontraditional growing options, including using an Earth Box or indoor composting facility, virtual delivery methods for garden-based programming, and ways to sustain such projects long-term. Families, administrators, and teachers interested in teaching hands-on should attend! All ages. Free for members, $15 for non-members.

Small-scale composting is a great way to keep a variety of household wastes out of the landfill, but how to get started? In this workshop led by home composters Erin Smaldone and Sara Crayton you’ll learn the basics including what compost is, how to make it, what you can and can’t add to your compost mix, the different types of composters, and how to use the compost you produce. You’ll go home with all the information you need to get started. All ages. Free for members, $15 for non-members.
