Blanche Lazzell and Cubism: How We Started Looking at the Painting and Not Through It

6:00 p.m.

Since the early 15th century, Western painting was bound to a tradition of projecting an illusion of space behind the picture plane (the actual surface of the painting). This concept of the picture plane as window allowed us to look through the painting to a seemingly 3-D world. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, artists began to challenge this idea which led, through Cubism, to the assertion of the 2-D pictorial surface of the painting. This complex transformation, as it is related to Blanche Lazzell’s art, will be explored in this presentation by Bernie Schultz.

Blanche Lazzell: From Morgantown to Montparnasse and Back Again

6:00 p.m.

When Blanche Lazzell sailed for Paris in July 1912, she entered an artistic environment far removed from her home in Morgantown. Settling into the exhilarating environment of Montparnasse, she quickly enrolled in several art academies, attended lectures at the Louvre, and sought out all the art galleries and exhibitions that would introduce her to the new avant-garde style in art. This revolution in style strongly influenced her and was further solidified when she returned to Paris in 1923-24 for additional study. As Lazzell stated when she began her studies at the Academie Moderne in January 1913, “I feel that I am at last in my element.”

Schnell & Paris

6:30 p.m.

In 2017, Morgantown guitarist and singer Terry Schnell teamed up with keyboardist Steve Paris to recapture the spark of classic coffeehouse performances — and the result is the dynamic duo Schnell & Paris. Audiences often remark that they “sound like more than two people,” thanks to Steve’s expressive piano and high harmonies paired with Terry’s rhythmic acoustic guitar and soaring harmonica solos.

Their repertoire ranges from inventive covers like “Blackbird” by Paul McCartney to Andrew Combs’ “Emily,” alongside heartfelt originals including “When You Come Home” and “Me Without You.” The result is a harmony-driven, richly layered performance that closes the season on a high note.

This event is proudly sponsored by Infinity Natural Resources. $5 for WVBG Members, $10 General Admission, Children 6 and under are free. Reserve your tickets today at wvbg.org.
